Roadtrip 2021: Denmark (and Northern Germany and CZ)

22. 7. - 4. 8. 2021: Roadtrip through the Czech Republic, Northern Germany (Rügen) and DENMARK

On July, 22th we started our trip heading North to the Czech Republic via Prague...with the original plan to only cross the Czech Republic to spend the evening in Dresden/Germany. In Prague it was time for a short fast food lunch break along the city highway....but meanwhile our car unfortunately decided to take a longer rest: Motor electronic problem ?!? Help!!!

About 30min later, the Czech automobile club UAMK came and carried us to their repair centre. Long story, shortly told: We ended up stranded in PRAGUE, sleeping in our van at the UAMK repair center ground, but with time for sightseeing in the old town centre (that could easly be reached thanks to our location at a metro station).

You always need to be flexible, when going on a road trip ;-P

In the mid afternoon of the next day we were finally able to move on: Now we had a long way to drive: through the Czech Republic, Eastern Germany up to the coast of the Eastern Sea to the island of RÜGEN!

We passed the bridge from Stralsund to the island RÜGEN in the late evening and checked in at our pre-booked camp near Breege around 22:00.

On the next day we tried to catch up on our plans and visited the most famouse tourist spots of Rügen:

In the morning we cycled to Cape ARKONA

In the afternoon we relaxed at the beach near Breege

and visited the famouse cliffs of "Königsstuhl" in the evening

On the next day we had to leave Rügen again, visiting the former KdF holiday resort Prora on the way.

Afterwards we drove east to ROSTOK to take the ferry boat to DENMARK in the early afternoon:

We entered Denmark in Gedser and then drove further north trough the lovely town STEGE to the island MØN.

The next 2 days we stayed on the hygge eco-camp "Møns Klint" near the Geocentre Møns Klint.

From there we visited the famouse limestone cliff coast "Møns Klint"

2 days later we left the beautiful island Møn again and headed further north to COPENHAGEN (København). The first night we spent on a simple, but very central camper parking place ("City Camp"). From there we visited the city center, old town and autonomous freetown Christiania by bike.

Freetown Christiana

Christianshavn

City centre

We walked up "The Round Tower" for a fantastic view over the city and the Øresund Bridge

The city castles ("Slots")

The famouse Nyhavn canal

"Den Lille Havfrue"

the modern design harbour neighbourhoods

with the representaives for Greenland and the Farøer islands

and a delicious and inexpensive fish and chips dinner - served by a youg crew (just around the corner of very touristic and expensive Nyhavn)

Our second night at Copenhagen we spent a bit north on the coast of Charlottenlund in an old fortress!

From Copenhagen we drove west, crossing the 18km long "Stoerebelt bridge"

and passing by the town Nyborg (with a short picture stop at Nyborg slot and garden)

And then headed north along the highway towards Aarhus.

We stayed at a nice camp south of Aarhus at Blommehavn with a beautiful beach

Unfortunately the weather was rainy and cool. Therefore we took the public bus to visit the city centre of AARHUS

Aarhus is also famouse for its open air museum "Den Gamble By"

with houses from the 1864, 1927 and 1974!

Another Aarhus special ;-)

In the evening we enjoyed a great dinner (forgetting about Corona) at the "Streetfood market" in the old bus terminal.

On the next day we drove further north through Northern Jylland, passing by Aalborg:

Aalborg's pedestrian zone

In the afternoon we reach the most northern part of Denmark: GRENEN (north of Skagen)

From the parking space we walked about 1km toward Cape Grenen - the meeting point of Skagerrak and Kattegat

...passing by lots of bunkers from WWII

Cape Grenen

We stayed at a nice camp in the dunes south of Skagen near Bunken (Sydstrand)

On the next day we visited the giant sand dune "Råbjerg Mile" with our bicycles

In the evening we visited the nice, yellow - and Denmark's most northern - town SKAGEN with the public bus and train.

The famous "Skagen yellow" everywhere

After a walk through the town centre we enjoyed a delicious fish dinner in one of the tiny harbour houses.

On the next day we left the Skagen peninsula and drove west along towards Hirtshals. We made a short stop in Lønstrup and then at Rubjerg Knude - a light house on the wild sandstone cliffs, that had already to be moved inland once.

Afterwards we drove along the coast passing by the "Jammerbucht", the beach town Løkken

and the famous cliff Bulbjerg Klitplantagerne (with another bunker)

At the bunker museum in Hirtshals we had one of our best Fish&Chips ;-)

Our next stop was in the surfer paradise "Cold Hawaii"/Klitmøller

endless beaches ...and an endless amount of bunkers from WWII

sunset in Klitmøller

A trip through Thy national park and Thysted (at Limfjorden)

On our way further south towards Hvide Sande we had to take a ferry boat (for 3km!)

Fisher town Hvide Sande

Our last sight seeing stop in Denmark was at the pittoresque town RIBE:

Our last overnight stop in Denmark was an the island RØMØ at Lakolk Strand (a wide and shallow beach)

a road to and on the beach!

On the way back home to Austria we made two stops in Germany.

One in HAMBURG (which is always worth a visit ...and not only for a Matjes sandwich ;-)

We stayed at a small city camp ground (Camping Buchholz) and took the bus to the city centre

And the second stop (with good food and beer!) was in DRESDEN

We stayed a at nice camp in a suburb (Camp Dresden Mockritz) and took again the bus to the city centre

remainings from communistic times
and the famous "Zwinger"
and Castle

A bit south-east of Dresden, close to the boarder to the Czech Republic lays the famous "Elbe Sandsteingebirge"

and the famous "Bastei Brücke"

From there, on August 6th, we crossed through the Czech Republic to drive back home to Vienna.
