Summer holiday 2017: Italy - Toscany and SARDEGNA

3 week Camping tour with our Fiat Doblo Minicaravan (and tent)

1st part: Ligurian Coast

From Vienna via Carinthia to our first on the road - over night stop at beautiful (but chilly) Lago di Cavazzo (near Tolmezzo)

Heading further south towards La Spezia and "Cinque Terre"From a campsite in Levanto we visited the "Cinque Terre" villages by train (Cinque Terre card needed!) and a hiking tour along the coastal path from Vernazza to Corniglia.

 Vernazza and Riomaggio

Levanto and its amazing coastal bike track along a former train track (with long rocky tunnels) to Bonasola and Framura

After 2 nights in Levanto we passed by the beautiful cities of  Lucca and Pisa on our way along the west coast of Toscany.

saving the leaning tower of Pisa ;-)

Passing by Livorno we drove further south to the coast north of Piombio (Val di Cornia) to spend 2 more nights on the main land on a big campsite (Continental) in the holiday village Marina di Castagneto - Donoratico - with its long sandy beaches and the luna park "Cavallino Matto"

After a short lunch break on the the beautiful  "Golfo di Baratta" on Sunday, 23rd of July, we finally took the "Moby" ferry boat from Piombino to SARDEGNA - Olbia.

2nd part: SARDEGNA

After a 6h cruise (on the open air deck and in Pullman seats) we arrived at Olbia late in the evening.
--> Short drive to the prebooked campsite in the holiday village of  San Teodoro - La Cinta (20 min south of Olbia). We stayed two days at this beautiful place, under Eucalyptus trees (with ants!) in a long sandy bay with salt lakes and lagoons (stagno) with lots of time for swimming, Stand Up Paddeling and cycling tours.

Then we drove further south, passing by the beautiful village of Posada and the marble mines of Orosei untill we reached the mountain village Dorgali. From there we took a windy and steep road down to the Golfo di Orosei (through a tunnel!) to the beautiful village Cala Gonone - where we rented a motor boat for a wonderful day trip along the Golfo di Orosei and its beautiful remoted beaches, that can only be visited by boat.

 Cala Gonone

Boat trip along the Golfo di Orosei
...with its remoted beaches (Cala Luna,...), breath taking cliffs and caves and lots of snorkeling adventures (we found a ship wreck near Cala Goloritze!)

Unfortunately the Maestral wind (Mistral), that already started in san Teodoro got even stronger in Cala Gonone and caused some sleeping problems at night.

After 3 wonderful days on the beautiful campsite in Cala Gonone...

...we drove further south along the beautiful coastal mountain ranges (passing by the Gulf of Arbatax) towards Costa Rei. We chose the big campsite north of Capo Ferratu "4Mori" with Eucalyptus trees and a (quite lonesome) long sandy bay with salty lagoons and Flamingos!!!

bicycle tour towards Capo Ferrato

Two days later - on a very hot day - we were ready again to leave and visited the beautiful capital city of Sardegna: Cagliari...

...with its Torre del Elefante

Through of the huge suburbs of Cagliari and along the highway 131 we crossed through the south western regions of Sardegna and headed towards Oristano - a city on the west coast and an important agricultural area of Sardegna. There we chose the nice campsite "Is Aruttas" on the famouse " Is Aruttas beach" with its quartz sand in the Marine protected area of Sinis Peninsula.

 Is Aruttas beach impressions...                                                                                                ...?!?

Visiting Capo San Marco and the Roman ruins of Tharros

and the city of Oristano

After 3 beautiful, but very hot days (with heavy Scirocco winds and bush fires quite near) we left Is Aruttas and drove further northalong the beautiful coast to visit Bosa

and the beautiful (Catalan influenced) city of Alghero

North west of Alghero we found the beautiful camping village "Torre del Porticciolo" situated on top of a very silent beautiful small bay:

 Torre del Porticciolo

We stayed there for 3 days and had a lot of time for snorkeling, Stand Up Paddeling, relaxing on the pool and a very beautiful but challenging bicycle tour to Capo Caccia and its breath taking "Grotta di Nettuno" that can only be reached by walking down 652 stairs (Escala del Cabirol)

Capo Caccia and "Grotta di Nettuno"

It was not easy to leave these beautiful places ...

...but we wanted to see more and drove further north towards Sassari, passing by the only natural fresh water lake of Sardegna "Lago di Baratz" near Porto Ferro (dunes).

On tour we also visited Castelsardo

and its old town center within the castle ruins

Our next stop on tour along the north coast was Sant Theras di Gallura and Capo Testa (from where you can see the Bonifacio coast of Corse!)

Capo Testa

There was Corse on the horizon!

After visiting the famouse (artificial and expensive) Costa Smeralda we had just one more over night stop in the Gulf of Palau on a camping village near Cannigone (Isuledda).

Costa Smeralda (harbour of Porto Cervo)

In the morning of August, 6th we said "Arrivederci" to beautiful Sardegna and left the island at Olbia with the Moby ferry boat.

Back on he main land we had an over night stay planned in famouse city of Florence.
After a detour on the city highways we finally found a very suitable campsite for us (in a eastern suburb on the river Arno). From there we could easily visit the beautiful city center by bike! (just 4km along the Arno river bike track):

Now it was really time to say Goodbye to Toscany and Italy and we had a save trip home to Austria within 2 more days.
