Summer holiday 2016 - Italy and Corsica

24. 7. 2016 - 14. 8. 2016                  From ITALY to CORSICA

Three weeks camping trip with our "Minibus" - our Fiat Doblo selfmade caravan!

1st part: Kärnten Austria
Visiting family and friends at Turracher Höhe and Oberdrauburg with a day trip to beautiful Weissensee:

2nd part: Italy - Gardasee (Lago di Garda)

After a beautiful trip through Südtirol / Trentino Alto Adige, and along the eastern coast of Lago di Garda with a sight seeing stop in the medieval town of Malcesine (unfortunately we did not manage to get a place in the cable car to Monto Baldo) we found a nice Camp (Park delle Rose) on the south eastern coast  of the lake near Lazise. The perfect place to visit "Gardaland" and "Movieland" and the "Caneva Aquapark" with its cool and amazing attractions! We could visit these amusement parks and the medival town of Lazise with our bikes.

3rd part: Corsica round trip

We headed further south and after a day trip through Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria we reached the Corsica Ferries terminal at Savona - Porto Vado Ligure. https://www.corsica-ferries.de/

We had a simple cabine booked for the 8h night cruise and reached Bastia in the early morning of August 1st.
Our first tour was a 4h drive around quite lonesome, but beautiful Cap Corse (- which reminded me a bit of Scottland or Ireland). Poor Julian got a bit sick from driving these windy roads so early in the morning.
In the afternoon we checked in at Camp Kalliste near St. Florent - a beautiful little town at a shallow lagoon with a river emptying the sea and long sandy beaches, dunes and pine and eucalyptus trees.

There we decided to visit the "Desert d'Agriates" with its remoted beach "Plage de Saleccia" by Quad! What an adventure! Each direction on a  1,5h lasting offroad track! Thank you, Julian, for sharing the challenging driving and navigating with me! ...But the beach (natural reserve) was so worth visiting!!!

Our next stop after a nice ride through Balagne country and the nothern coast with Lozari and Ile Rousse was Calvi and its beautiful Gulf. We stayed 2 days on  camp "La Pinede" under Pine and Eucalyptus trees, just seperated from the beach through the coastal train track.

After a relaxing day on the beach and sight seeing evening trip to beautiful Calvi (and its amazing Yachts!) we went on a wonderful and exciting (pre-booked) Canyoning-tour to Melaghia canyon in Foret de Bonifatu:

 carrying the equipment up                                                             the
track to Melaghia canyon

rope climbing, jumping in chilly cold pools and "abseilen"

After this adventurous tour we drove along the breathtaking beautiful red cliffs of Scandola Natural Reserve Park and the challenging road along the west coast and the Gulf of Girolata to the beautiful tiny, but rough harbour village of Porto

Narrow and windy roads

Porto

We chose a camp (Funtala de L'Oro) about 3km away from the beach up the road to Evisa (and close to Spelunca gorge) where we had the chance to experience swimming in  cristal clear river pools!

After Porto the road got even more challenging through the "e Calanches" and nice little villages in the mountains (Piana,...) and along the coast (Cargese, Plage du Liamone,...) and led us to the biggest city of Corse: Ajaccio.

There we visited the Parata Peninsula Nature Reserve Park with its "Iles the Sanguinaires".

After a "car sightseeing tour" through Ajaccio we headed further south along the main road and the nice village of Olmeto and the Gulf of Valinco to the touristic harbour village  Propriano - where we stayed on a nice campsite (Tikiti) for 2 days.

 Propriano beaches

And then we headed further south again via the national road, through the mountain village of Sartene and the picturesque "Site de Roccapine" ("the Lion" rock)  till Bonifacio.

The Lion rock

We decided to visit the beautiful old town of Bonifacio by bike (which was an excellent idea) and climbed the castle, the cliffs and the "Escalier du Roy d'Aragon" - uff!

The best candy shop ever! In a pirate cave!

On the way to the Gulf of Porto Veccio we stopped at one of the most beautiful beaches in Corse: Palombaggia!

and found a very special Corse flag !?!

It was a bit difficult this time to find a free campsite, but finally we could stay for another 2 days at "Camp Bella Vista" between Porto Vecchio and Palombaggia beach.

On our second last day our car needed to be repaired (the roads of Corse!) on the way back to Bastia along the flat east coast, but then finally, we could make a last relaxing stop at the "L'Etang de Bigulia" - the lagoon south of Bastia at the beautiful campsite "San Damiano" with its long sandy beach:

On Thursday, August 11th, early in the morning we took the ferry boat from Bastia to Nice. Good bye beautiful Corsica!

Our trip back home lead us from Nice, Cap Ferat and Monaco along the Cote d'Azur and the Italian Riviera, with a last stop at a nice campsite in Diano Marina, near Imperia.

We made a last afternoon stop  in Jesolo near Venice and came back home to Vienna with more then 2500 km on the road, on August, 13th.
